Around 8pm on Monday, Sept. 08, Blue Hour received a foul alert of protest when an autonomous group entered into the restaurant and 16 stink bombs were set off inside, right next to the kitchen. This action was taken during dinner hours in order to disrupt business because this restaurant refuses to take the cruel and grotesque foie gras off of their menu.
Foie gras (the liver of a duck or a goose that has been specially fattened) involves force-feeding birds more food than they would eat in the wild, and much more than they would voluntarily eat domestically. The feed, usually corn boiled with fat (to facilitate ingestion), deposits large amounts of fat in the liver, thereby producing the buttery consistency sought by the gastronome. Foie gras production methods, and force feeding in particular, consist of cruel and inhumane treatment of animals. Specific complaints include livers swollen to many times their normal size, impaired liver function, expansion of the abdomen making it difficult for birds to walk, death if the force feeding is continued, and scarring of the esophagus. It's one of the most abusive factory farm products, since workers shove tubes down birds' throats in order to make them consume a grossly large amount of food multiple times each day for the last couple weeks prior to their slaughter. California and more than a dozen countries have banned its production.
There has been a long standing campaign against Blue Hour because they and their customers have been hostile, violent and have refused to even engage in dialogue with people who oppose foie gras production. "We communicated to Blue Hour that this is just a glimpse of what is to come if Blue Hour and their customers continue to engage in animal cruelty. Foie gras stinks, and now so does your bougie restaurant. Fuck Foie Gras!"
