Barstow, CA: Vandalism & Burglary Causes Power Outage

Vandalism to a Southern California Edison substation in Barstow left thousands without power Friday.

The initial outage struck 6,541 customers at 11:44 a.m., after a substation one mile southeast of H Street and Bonanza Road was broken into and vandalized.

The initial outage lasted only about 30 seconds, she said, but a second outage hit the same customers at 12:12 p.m., leaving thousands of businesses and individuals without power throughout the afternoon. As of 3 p.m., 4,354 customers were still without power.

The outage apparently resulted from a burglary attempt that cut wires at the substation.

Commuters and tourists were left unable to fill their fuel tanks as multiple gas stations lost power.
